In wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, foam issues often become an invisible killer of efficiency. Foam accumulation leads to slurry overflow, pump cavitation, a sharp drop in desulfurization efficiency, and even system shutdown. Conventional defoamers either work slowly or have short duration; worse, some products interfere with the contact reaction between absorbent and sulfur dioxide, causing chemical waste.
Chemi Tech desulfurization defoamer is designed to address these pain points. It uses a special polyether and organosilicon composite formula, which quickly spreads on the foam surface, disrupts the liquid film tension, and achieves instant defoaming. Meanwhile, its molecular structure is stable in high-temperature, high-alkalinity desulfurization slurry, with suppression duration over three times longer than ordinary defoamers. It does not alter slurry pH or affect the desulfurization chemical balance.
The specific solution consists of three steps:
Step 1: Diagnose foam severity. Observe foam layer height and slurry overflow conditions. Mild foam (height <10 cm) can be treated with preventive drip feeding; moderate foam (10-30 cm) requires periodic batch dosing; severe foam (>30 cm or already overflowing) needs immediate shock dosing followed by continuous drip feeding.
Step 2: Determine the addition method. It is recommended to use a metering pump for continuous drip feeding into the absorption tower circulating slurry inlet or foam accumulation area, with the dosage set at 0.005%-0.02% of slurry volume. If continuous feeding is not feasible, intermittent batch addition can be used, but the interval should not exceed 4 hours.
Step 3: Dynamic monitoring and adjustment. Record foam layer height every 2 hours after dosing. If the foam height drops by more than 50% within 2 hours, maintain the current dosage. If the effect is insufficient, gradually increase the dosage by 10% until the foam stabilizes within the controllable range.
Case study: A 300 MW unit desulfurization tower of a petrochemical enterprise in East China frequently experienced slurry overflow with a foam layer of up to 40 cm. The original defoamer required addition every 4 hours and reduced desulfurization efficiency from 98% to 93%. After switching to Chemi Tech desulfurization defoamer, an initial shock dose of 0.02% by volume reduced the foam layer to 5 cm within 30 minutes. Then continuous drip feeding at 0.008% was implemented. Over the next 24 hours, the foam layer remained below 8 cm, desulfurization efficiency recovered to 97.5%, and chemical costs decreased by 40%.
