TiO2 dispersion stability dictates coating opacity and gloss. A Malaysia’s industrial coatings plant encountered settlement-induced color drift (ΔE>3.0) and gloss drop (85°→70°) in solvent-based PU leather finishes. Chemi Tech KMK-4008 (electroneutral amine amide salt) achieved:
Zero hard settlement in 50% TiO2 concentrates after 60 days (viscosity change<5%);
98.5% hiding power (contrast ratio) and stable 92° gloss (60° measurement);
50% reduced haze in electrostatic spraying.
Anionic characteristics ensure stability in acidic systems (e.g., coil coatings). Amide groups adsorb onto TiO2 hydroxyl sites, reducing interfacial tension below 22 mN/m to eliminate "white spots". Dosage is only 2.5% vs. TiO2, 30% lower than conventional products.
Adding 3% KMK-4008 (vs. TiO2) in leather topcoats controlled fineness below 5 μm. Roll-coating speed increased 25% with no "mottling", batch ΔE stabilized below 0.8210.
