A paper machine running at full speed will not tolerate a foam blanket for long. Foam in the headbox throws off basis-weight uniformity, foam in the washing stage slows drainage, and foam in black liquor recovery drags down evaporation and chemical reuse. Pulp and paper remains one of the largest consumers of defoamer chemistry, and the reasons are written into the process itself: fibers, soaps, lignins and mechanical agitation all work together to stabilize air.
Where the foam comes from
Resin and fatty acids released from wood, along with surfactants in recycled furnish, act as natural foam stabilizers. Add the shear of screens, pumps and the Fourdrinier wire, and air gets beaten into a fine, persistent foam. Washing and screening stages are especially prone, and once foam carries fiber or fines, it contaminates the sheet and clogs felt and drainage paths. The result is the same whether the mill runs virgin fiber or a heavy recycled furnish: throughput falls and quality gets harder to hold.
One chemistry does not fit every stage
The wet end and the recovery loop place different demands on a defoamer. A product that works in the headbox may be wrong for black liquor, where high temperature, alkalinity and dissolved solids punish weak formulations. Silicone defoamers give fast knockdown but raise carryover questions in mills that close the water loop, so many operations now favor non-silicone and bio-based options such as modified polyethers and fatty-acid esters that break down cleanly and leave no silicone residue in the sheet or the effluent.
Dosing point and consistency
Where a defoamer is added can matter as much as which one is chosen. Continuous, low-level dosing ahead of the foam source usually beats shock additions, which spike chemistry and can themselves destabilize the sheet. Mills that tie dosing to a level sensor or a measured foam load waste less chemical and hold steadier formation than those that dose on a timer.
Green chemistry is no longer optional
Regulation is pushing the sector hard. Tighter VOC thresholds and EU REACH pressure on mineral-oil and silicone actives are steering mills toward biodegradable, low-toxicity defoamers that still perform under alkaline bleaching conditions. Suppliers have responded with bio-based grades aimed squarely at pulp and paper, a sign that the segment now treats sustainability as a baseline, not a differentiator. The appeal is operational as much as environmental: a defoamer that degrades cleanly in the recovery loop cuts effluent load and keeps downstream microbiology undisturbed.
Foam in a paper mill is rarely a single problem with a single fix. The mills that stay steady treat defoamer selection stage by stage, dose to the actual foam load, and watch how each product behaves in the recovery loop. Do that, and foam stops being a rate limit and becomes a managed variable.
