As soon as the amine solution in a desulfurization tower foams, the tower differential pressure rises first, hydrogen sulfide in the treated gas exceeds the limit, and in severe cases amine solution is carried out from the top with the gas flow, depositing scale on the lean-rich heat exchanger. The first reaction on site is to top up antifoam; it goes quiet for a few hours and is the same the next day. Foaming has more than one source: degradation products and heat-stable salts lower the surface tension, while hydrocarbons, corrosion inhibitors and lubricating oil carried in from upstream form another category. If the source is not stopped, antifoam can only hold it off for a while.
Whether the Foam Breaks Down or Grows With Stirring Tells You Where the Source Is
Take a cup of amine solution and look: if the foam disperses within ten-odd seconds after swirling, it is mostly mechanical foaming from high gas velocity or tray liquid level fluctuation, and adjusting the parameters back will suppress it. If the foam is fine, clings to the cup wall and actually grows larger when stirred, surface-active substances have accumulated in the amine solution. Then look at the color: dark and black usually accompanies hydrocarbons and rust, while yellow or white is mostly heat-stable salts and degradation products. If carryover suddenly increases, first check whether the upstream filter has broken through.
Order of Handling: Check the Source First, Stabilize Parameters Next, and Only Then Touch the Antifoam
First check the lean solution filter and activated carbon; a shortening filter element replacement cycle usually means contamination is accumulating. Then check the regenerator bottom temperature and regeneration pressure; if the temperature is low, heat-stable salts build up more. Then take an amine solution sample for analysis, looking at suspended solids and hydrocarbon content. If the source is not yet stopped after these steps, do not rush to add antifoam, since adding it only suppresses for a few hours. If you really must add it, start from a very low ratio, feed it slowly along the circulation pump inlet, and watch the differential pressure change over one to two hours. If doubling the dosage brings no improvement, the problem is not in the foam itself.
Selection Points: Compatibility Matters More Than Defoaming Speed
Amine solution is a strongly alkaline, high-viscosity continuous medium, so the antifoam must first not break emulsion and float oil; floating oil clogs filters and deposits on heat exchangers, both of which are trouble. It must also withstand the high temperature at the regenerator bottom and remain active after one pass. When suspended solids in the amine solution are high, it is easily adsorbed and carried away by particles, and grades with poor persistence need frequent top-ups.
Chemitech's Solution
For amine solution desulfurization, gas purification and high-viscosity circulating systems, Chemitech offers corresponding antifoams organized in three lines, silicone, polyether and silicone-polyether types, covering conventional amine-method desulfurization and deep purification sections.
Silicone-polyether types have broader adaptability in high-viscosity systems that tend to separate; polyether types are friendlier to strongly alkaline environments, with less floating oil and separation under continuous operation; silicone types act faster at low solids content and in mild conditions. The three differ in emphasis on water solubility, temperature resistance and persistence, and the choice has to be made according to the actual conditions of the amine solution.
When suspended solids and hydrocarbons in the amine solution are high, the antifoam is carried away by particles and no amount will sustain control; this kind of source problem has to be tackled at the purification step. How far to go must be judged in light of the system conditions.
Describe the amine solution type, circulation temperature, contamination level and equipment configuration, and our technical team will give a matching direction and then arrange a sample for confirmation. Natural Gas High-Temperature and High-Pressure Antifoam Solutions and Alkali-Resistant Antifoam Solutions are worth a look first.
Summary
Foaming in desulfurization amine solution looks urgent, but the root is usually in amine solution purification and upstream contaminants, not in the antifoam dosage. Find the source of contamination, straighten out regeneration and filtration, and then talk about which antifoam to use. When selecting, focus on compatibility and persistence. Chemitech offers silicone, polyether and silicone-polyether products for amine solution desulfurization and gas purification that can be matched to operating conditions. If you have an amine solution analysis report and equipment parameters, our engineers can go through them with you.
