During the application and curing of waterborne baking paints, poor leveling is one of the core causes of film appearance defects. Common problems such as orange peel, craters, pinholes and brush marks not only severely affect the appearance and gloss of the coating, but may also compromise its protective performance. These issues are often closely related to unbalanced surface tension in the coating system, improper solvent evaporation gradient, poor substrate wetting, or imprecise control of the application environment.
To address these persistent leveling challenges, Chemi Tech has developed a series of high-efficiency leveling agents for waterborne baking paints. Rather than a simple additive, our solution is built on a deep understanding of film formation mechanisms, precisely regulating surface tension to promote full spreading and coalescence of the coating before curing, thereby achieving an extremely smooth and even film.
Our specific solution and steps are as follows:
Step one: problem diagnosis. Our technical team will help analyze the form of the specific leveling defect, such as distinguishing orange peel from craters, and examine the coating formulation, substrate treatment and baking process.
Step two: product selection. Based on the diagnosis, we match the appropriate Chemi Tech leveling agent. For example, for orange peel caused by Benard cells, we recommend a leveling agent that balances surface tension and promotes lateral flow; for craters caused by contaminants or surface tension differences, we select a leveling agent that significantly reduces dynamic surface tension and enhances wetting and spreading.
Step three: process optimization. We provide scientific dosage recommendations (typically 0.1%-1.0% of the total formulation) and guide customers through sufficient stirring and dispersion. We may also suggest adjusting the dilution ratio, spray viscosity or baking temperature curve to achieve the best synergy between the leveling agent and the overall process.
Step four: effect verification. Spraying tests are conducted in the laboratory and on site, with visual inspection, gloss meters, orange peel meters and other tools used to quantitatively evaluate the improvement in leveling.
Case study:
A metal products factory in East China frequently experienced mild orange peel at the edges and flat junctions of its waterborne black baking paint, with uneven gloss. After evaluation by Chemi Tech technical staff, it was recommended to add a specific silicone-modified leveling agent, KMP-328, at a dosage of 0.3% to the original formulation. After adjustment, the orange peel was essentially eliminated, gloss increased by more than 10 units, and there was no negative impact on intercoat adhesion. The customer was very satisfied with the final smooth, mirror-like finish.
Choosing Chemi Tech means choosing not only a leveling agent product, but also a reliable technical partner. We are committed to helping you thoroughly overcome waterborne baking paint leveling problems with professional additive solutions, enhancing product added value and market competitiveness.
